Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.
The facility, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of entry passages leading to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - enforced militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This strike shows British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.
UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.
"I must thank all the members of British forces participating in this mission for their skill and their bravery," he added. "They were among a great many British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."
Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in the country, after an attack killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. reports IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
